They are popping up like flies! But social networking sites won't make money. Not unless you have thousands of members and getting members is like pulling teeth these days.

An interesting point made at the Social Networking Conference was that Social Networking should not be seen as a revenue stream or a business model on its own. Instead it should be seen as an add on to services a company offers.

Dating is a different story. It has a revenue model with a history that works.

I personally think that the future of social networking site is in using various paid services for site users.

Of course, online dating industry went far away from social networking guys in their qualities of monetizing their databases. That's why, probably, at last social networking industry decided to learn from them. Now we see more often article headers: "Dating at Facebook, MySpace" etc.

In Russian Market, social networks use a wide range of services to pay the bills. For example: lift up profile in search, send e-card, delete a bad rating, rate the highest mark, send a gift (order for yourself), email, hide profile and much more. All micro payments are taken with sms technologies and do not require much effort from a user.

Survival only on ads does not work any more, I think.
