Networking for Business and Pleasure

It seems like now days, you have to have more than just knowledge and experience to get ahead in the corporate world. It takes mingling with the “right” people and unfortunately, we often find ourselves too busy with our personal and professional lives to make the extra effort to do so. This really doesn’t have to be this way.

The basic approach to networking is actually very simple. As long as you have the ability to interact with others on a social level and you are able to carry on a conversation, you can network! You don’t have to become lifelong buddies with someone in order to receive the benefits of networking with them. The object of networking is to develop contacts that can be beneficially rewarding to both parties involved. By placing yourself in a position of being able to &^%$#$^ a favor can go a long way in many aspects of your life, not just on the job. “You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours”. By forming a network of acquaintances, you’ll be surprised just how much further you can go in all areas of your life.

One of the first things to remember about networking is that you should be prepared to return any favor as long as it does not hurt you or others in the process. And, if that means helping someone out first, then so be it. You can always call up their favor sometime down the road when you need it the most. This way, you’re building up your ”bank” for a rainy day.

As far as gathering your network of “friends”, you might be surprised with just how easy it is to accomplish this. There are networking organizations in most cities that you can join or you might even consider some of the many social and business networks that are hosted on the internet these days. You can even find people to network with at your local church or Rotary club. The list is endless, so just get creative and join the one that interests you the most. By having a strong network, you can gain the assistance you need in finding a job, assist you in a business venture, introductions to other like-minded individuals and more.
